Commercial Restroom Layout Guide

Best practices for laying out commercial restrooms: stall arrangement, fixture spacing, ADA approach clearances, and traffic flow.

Common Stall Arrangements

  • Between Walls

Stalls span the full width of an alcove. Most efficient when restroom width is fixed.

  • Corner

Stalls run along one wall with a single end pilaster. Common in small restrooms with 2–3 stalls.

  • Alcove

Stalls open into a recessed area with the door swing protected. Good for high-traffic facilities.

Fixture Spacing

  • • Centerline of toilet to side wall: 16–18" (15" minimum, 18" preferred)
  • • Centerline of toilet to centerline of next fixture: 30" minimum
  • • Centerline of urinal to side wall or partition: 13–15"
  • • Centerline of urinal to centerline of next urinal: 24–30"
  • • Lavatory clear floor space: 30" wide x 48" deep in front of fixture

Approach & Maneuvering Clearances

ADA-compliant restrooms require a 60" diameter turning circle (or T-shaped turn) inside the room, plus an unobstructed approach to each ADA stall and lavatory. Plan the partition layout so the door swing of the ADA stall does not encroach on the turning circle or the approach clearance to the lavatory.
