Why ADA Compliance Matters
The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the ICC A117.1 accessibility standard set minimum requirements for commercial restrooms. Failing to meet them exposes building owners to lawsuits, occupancy permit denials, and costly retrofits. Every commercial restroom in the US must include at least one ADA-compliant stall, and the partitions are a key part of the spec.
ADA Stall Dimensions
| Requirement | Dimension |
|---|---|
| Minimum stall width | 60" |
| Minimum depth (wall-hung WC) | 56" |
| Minimum depth (floor-mounted WC) | 59" |
| Minimum clear door opening | 32" |
| Door swing | Outward (or sliding) |
| Toilet centerline from side wall | 16–18" |
Grab Bars
- Side-wall grab bar: 42" minimum length, mounted 33–36" above finished floor
- Rear-wall grab bar: 36" minimum length, centered behind the toilet
- 1-1/4" to 1-1/2" diameter, with 1-1/2" clearance from wall
- Must support a 250 lb static load in any direction
- Partition panels at the grab-bar wall must be reinforced for the load
Door Hardware
ADA stall door hardware must be operable with one hand, without tight grasping, pinching, or twisting. That rules out the standard slide bolt and requires a paddle latch or U-pull. See our locks & latches page for ADA-compliant options.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the minimum size of an ADA bathroom stall?
An ADA-compliant stall is a minimum 60" wide by 56" deep for wall-hung toilets, or 60" wide by 59" deep for floor-mounted toilets, with a 32" minimum clear door opening.
How high should grab bars be installed?
Grab bars must be mounted 33–36" above the finished floor, with a 42" minimum side-wall bar and a 36" minimum rear-wall bar.
Do ADA stall doors have to swing out?

ADA water closets must have a seat 17–19" above the finished floor, measured to the top of the toilet seat.
